Update from Yellow Springs Schools Superintendent

September 21, 2020

Dear Yellow Springs Families & Staff,

Good afternoon!

As we enter our fifth week of instruction, I would like to provide you some updates.

As you know, we are using a new platform this year–Abre. Within Abre, teachers have the option of using Abre Class to house their instruction or Google Classroom (Seesaw for our primary grades). By the start of next school year, it is the hope that all teachers will be utilizing Abre Class.

However, to facilitate grades and the grade reporting process, we must utilize ProgressBook. I understand this is another platform for parents (and students) to use, but use of ProgressBook for this year will make sure that you receive adequate reporting on the academic progress of your child. We will send out letters to students and parents with Progress Book access codes as our interim reporting begins this week.

In addition, when we approved the updated school calendar this summer, we had not yet identified parent-teacher conference dates given the uncertainty of this school year. We now have these dates. Our conferences at our elementary and secondary sites will mimic each other. The fall conference schedule is as follows:

October 14, 2020

October 15, 2020

October 16, 2020
(no school for students)

Mills Lawn Elementary

4:00 to 7:30 p.m.

4:00 to 7:30 p.m.

8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

McKinney Middle/Yellow Springs High

4:30 to 8:00 p.m.

4:30 to 8:00 p.m.

8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

While these dates are before grade cards are issued, it is an excellent time to meet with teachers to understand your child’s performance on benchmarks and standards, and collectively identify means for improvement. Although many of you no doubt are communicating regularly with teachers during this remote learning period, this is a formal way to discuss your child. All fall conferences will be virtual. Please expect communication from your child’s principal in the upcoming week regarding conference scheduling.

The spring conference schedule will follow the same pattern as fall conferences. However, at the MS/HS one of the evenings will be reserved for a scheduling night, where parents and students can meet with a teacher to craft next year’s academic schedule. At this point, we intend on holding our spring conferences in a face-to-face format.

(no school for students)

Mills Lawn Elementary

4:00 to 7:30 p.m.

4:00 to 7:30 p.m.

8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

McKinney Middle/Yellow Springs High

4:30. to 8:00 p.m.

4:30 to 8:00 p.m.

8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The dates for parent-teacher conferences allow for two evenings and one full day (as allowable by ODE). We hope this broad spectrum of times allows for easier scheduling for parents. We have deliberately selected the all-day conference dates to either coincide with a weekend or already scheduled holiday to make it easier for parents. While school will be in session on the days we are having evening conferences, there will be no school for students on the all-day conference dates.

Finally, it is necessary to add a professional development date to our calendar to accommodate upcoming training. This will be on Monday, November 30. As with the selection of our parent-teacher conference dates, this date was chosen as it is the Monday after the Thanksgiving holiday, with the intention of making it easier for families.

Please reach out to your child’s principal or to me with any questions.

As always, thank you for your support of Yellow Springs Schools.

Best,

Dr. Terri L. Holden
Superintendent
